Intertextuality (the shaping of texts' meanings by other texts, also described as 'The way in which texts refer to other media texts that producers assume the audience will recognise') is also exemplified here Their recent music video for the single 'LET ME GO' was directed by 'thritytwo' (William Lovelace and Dylan Southern).
The music video, in fitting with the reputation of the bands attitute is all-exposing and gritty. The interextual references question todays society and our own morals. It demonstrates the audience of these events as simply looking down at others seemingly in order to give themselves a better moral position. It parodies the TV talk shows for part of its sequence, with a series of quick cuts and reaction shots having the effect of speeding up and dramatising the sequence. The character 'Patrick Chase' is used in reference to TV talk show host Jeremy Kyle, whos scathing comments against his 'interviewes' are praised by 'THE PATRICK CHASE SHOW' audience. Yet, the video depicts the character as hypocritical and corrupt as a montage of clips depicting the character committing crime, adultery, taking drugs is juztposed with his 'saviour' image in front of the television show cameras.
The audience is encouraged to detach themselves from having any sympathy with the character and then question our own morals and instinct to look down on others and past our own faults. It is a massively influential music video.
